iMovie vs LumaFusion on iPad: Which Editing Jobs Justify Paying?
Compare simple assembly with detailed timeline work, and separate the base purchase from optional extras.
The short answer
Use iMovie first for a straightforward video with clips, titles and music. Consider LumaFusion when a particular layer arrangement, audio adjustment or interchange requirement justifies its extra controls and cost.
Side by side
| Your job | Start here | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Family or school montage | iMovie | A required arrangement becomes cumbersome |
| Several independently controlled layers | Evaluate LumaFusion | Verify the exact control and device support |
| Basic overlay | Check iMovie first | An overlay alone is not a purchase reason |
| XML or multicam workflow | Check LumaFusion add-ons | Not automatically included in base price |
| Future revision | Keep project and media | A playable export alone is insufficient |
Begin with the movie you actually need
Write a short brief: duration, destination, orientation, spoken audio and required titles. A family montage and a client interview are different jobs even if both finish as an MP4. Choose the tool that completes your brief with the least repeated workaround.
For a useful trial, assemble three original clips with one title and music. Then identify one genuinely required extra, such as independently controlling several audio elements. Do not turn a simple project into a feature-count contest.
Where iMovie is enough
Apple documents Magic Movie, Storyboard and Movie projects. The first two help with assembly and a shot plan; a Movie gives more manual arrangement. Its iPad guide also includes overlay effects, so the mere need for picture-in-picture does not by itself prove that you must buy another editor.
Where LumaFusion earns its learning time
The developer’s listing describes six video/audio-or-graphic tracks plus six additional audio tracks, keyframed adjustments and audio controls. That makes it a candidate when a specific edit is awkward in a simpler workflow. It is not a guarantee of faster export on your iPad.
The US store lists a $29.99 base purchase. Enhanced features such as Multicam Studio and XML export are offered separately or through Creator Pass. A screenshot of the interface is not evidence that every optional feature comes with the base app.
A simple brief and an extended brief
Simple brief: three clips, a readable opening title, music that does not mask speech and a final video that plays at the destination. Keep iMovie if this is all you need and the result is easy to revise.
Extended brief: several visual elements plus independently adjusted audio and a planned handoff. Write the exact extra control you need, check the current manual and purchase boundary, then decide whether the saved editing time is worth learning another timeline.
Protect the edit as well as the export
A finished video cannot substitute for an editable project. Keep source clips, project files and any externally referenced media. Open the delivered video in another player and listen through transitions, titles and the final frame.
Before buying for a collaboration, confirm the recipient’s expected project format. A flat movie may satisfy delivery, while a future revision needs the project and media. The right handoff can matter more than the app’s longest feature list.
